A Death in the Family, by Karl Ove Knausgaard

Karl Ove is born in Kristiansand, on the southern tip of Norway. His parents soon begin to live separate lives, and eventually separate. He has an unruly, rural, perhaps sheltered life, an outsider who can't quite fit in, can't quite understand girls, can't quite find himself to be strong or reliable.

He goes to partiers, he play the drums, not very well, in a rock band. He moves to Bergen, and writes for a student newspaper. He grows up in the slipstream of an older brother, and seems to lack the strength to establish his own identity. This is partly the result of difficult relationship with his father, a teacher who tumbles into alcoholism.

His description of the circumstances in which his father died, back living with his grandmother, in utter, stinking, bottle strewn filth and squalor is pitiless.

I looked at her. She was sitting exactly as before and was probably not aware that a groan had passed her lips.

He had been her first born.

Children were not supposed to predecease their parents, they weren't supposed to. That was the idea. 

And to me, what dad been to me?

Someone I wished dead.

As the title suggests, death hangs heavily over Knausgaard's novel. It begins with a forensic description of the physical processes of death, and an examination of why we try to repress the evidence of something so natural, and builds inexorably to the bureaucracy and practicalities of dispersal and disposal following the death of his father. There is no euphemism, no sugaring of the pill in this unflinching account. 

Today is 27 February. The time is 11.43pm. I, Karl Ove Knausgaard, was born in December 1968, and at the time of writing I am thirty-nine years old. I have three children - Vanja, Heidi and John - and am in my second marriage, to Linda Boström Knausgaard. All four are asleep in the rooms around me, in an apartment in Malmö where we have lived for a year and a half. Apart from some parents of the children at Vanja and Heidi's nursery we do not know anyone here. This is not a loss, at any rate not for me, I don't get anything out of socialising anyway. I never say what I really think, what I really mean, but always more or less agree with with whoever I am talking to at the time, pretend that what they say is of interest to me, except when I am drinking, in which case more often than not I go too far the other way...

Maybe, but Knausgaard the author is certainly not frightened of saying what he really thinks, and his willingness to portray real people, his close family, his wives, his children, with brutal intensity has apparently caused great hurt and great controversy.

The original Norwegian title is telling. Min Kamp -  My Struggle - is a deliberately provocative statement by an author who approaches his work with huge power and an utter lack of compromise.

When I look at a beautiful painting I have tears in my eyes, but not when I look at my own children. That does not mean that I do not love them, because I do with all my heart, it simply means that the meaning they produce is not sufficient to fulfil a whole life.

Convincingly translated from Norwegian by Don Bartlett, A Death in the Family is gripping experience. It is a page turner, a moving, entertaining, chilling experience. I don't expect to read a better novel this year.
