I made the same mistake as you, and read this one thinking it was first in the series. I did appreciate that it is a good book, but it wasn't really my cup of tea - just too sexist and cynical for me (I hated his attitude to the women in the book). That short story at the heart of it was chillingly cold. I don't think I'll read any more of this series, but I can see that it is very well-written and insightful.
