In the spirit of these austere times, I am not going to buy another novel in 2010. Indeed, I am drawing up plans to slash my To Be Read mountain by an "eye watering" 40pc by Christmas. A quick glance at my Amazon order history reveals ten novels bought this year and not read, one competition prize (thanks, Uriah), two older titles bought for country specific trips that I haven't quite managed, and one long-lingering heavyweight must-read (from Chile - any guesses?). Then there are three books I am very keen to read but am struggling because they are in Swedish and I am nowhere near as good at reading Swedish as I can convince myself I am when in a bookshop.
Of the 11 titles at the base camp, four are written by Britons, two by Swedes, two by Norwegians, one Hungarian, one Italian, and one by a Swiss. Four are crime novels, two came from a newspaper Best of list, at least one was a blog recommendation, another was recommended by a friend, and three are Amazon recommends.
